Tiny (fewer than 5,000 vehicles sold per year) manufacturers are hoping that the EPA makes special allowances for them since the government agency has said these companies will get their own rules. Larger car makers (50-400k cars) are allowed to have 25,000 cars per year exceed mileage targets without being penalized.

McLaren's most lust-worthy supercars


               McLaren announced production plans for its MP4-12C supercar earlier this year, and most recently brought the car to California so we could get a look.
      
     Along with the car, which a McLaren representative said was 98-percent production ready, McLaren also put an open chassis on display to show off the MP4-12C's construction. The cockpit is housed in a thick carbon fiber tub, with aluminum suspension pieces bolted on front and rear. As these pieces make up the structural elements of the car, the body panels work for aerodynamics, not rigidity. 
      McLaren boasts that its carbon fiber production techniques are refined to the point that it can produce one of these tubs in four hours.       When Nissan unleashed its latest version of the GT-R in 2007, it seemed there was no room for improvement. Engineered to extreme levels, this GT-R used a high-power twin turbo V-6, essentially a racing engine, a dual-clutch six-speed automated manual transmission, and a very advanced all-wheel-drive system.
But Nissan demonstrates with the 2012 model that technology can always be improved, increasing engine output by 45 horsepower. And what looks like a minor bodywork update also increases downforce by 10 percent. For a cosmetic update, Nissan added LED running lights.
     We also found a slight mystery on the all-wheel-drive control switch. In the most recent version of the GT-R we've driven, a 2010 model, the all-wheel-drive switch offered racing, normal, and snow modes. In the cabin of the 2012 model, we noticed the Snow label has been replaced by Save.

      General Motors Co. is installing a relatively inexpensive start/stop system to give the 2012 Buick LaCrosse a 25 percent boost in fuel economy. The technology, now dubbed eAssist, is modular and likely will spread across a range of GM vehicles. "From a business standpoint," said Steve Poulos, eAssist global chief engineer, "there is an opportunity to bring this kind of light electrification and regenerative braking to the vast majority of our vehicles." Poulos said eAssist is similar in principle to the belt-alternator starter start/stop system first used on the 2007 Saturn Vue Green Line.

We tested lane departure systems, blind-spot detection, adaptive cruise control, and automated braking.
     Now, at the end of the year, we look back on all these cars to see which were the best. Our five top tech cars for 2010 have advanced power trains and suspensions, feature-rich navigation, top tier audio, and innovative driver assistance features.

     Lexus adds a much needed convertible to its lineup with the 2010 Lexus IS 350 C. As the name suggests, it is based on the IS 350 sedan, Lexus' smallest and most affordable car. But a low price doesn't mean a shortage of luxury; the cabin uses high-quality materials, with excellent fit and finish. Although the IS 350 C feels like a sports car initially, handling doesn't hold up when inertial forces try to drag it off the road. Steering gets vague and the car doesn't hold its line. But cabin tech is newly updated, even beyond what we've seen in the IS 350 sedan, with traffic and weather integrated into the navigation system, and an impressive Bluetooth phone system.

Jaguar XF Nice Cars


     On first getting into the 2009 Jaguar XF, the cars seems like the ultimate in automotive tech. A red backlight on the engine start button pulses with a heartbeat cadence. Push it, and panels over the air vents open up while the shift dial rises from the console. That's right, a shift dial. Recognizing that most automatic transmissions are electronically controlled, the XF does away with a big legacy shifter, opting for a big dial that you turn to the different drive modes. The touch-screen interface uses a nicely designed set of menus, reminiscent of the LCARS computer interface from Star Trek.
      But there are a few signs that Jaguar isn't quite ready for this tech future. The touch-screen interface is slow, taking a few moments between the time you touch a button and the resultant action. The information architecture is also poor, with too many actions required to access the ipod integration screen, for example. It's too bad Jaguar isn't still a Ford property, as the XF could really benefit from Ford Sync. Driving tech is better, though, as the XF can be had with a blind spot warning system and adaptive cruise control, not to mention the excellent audio produced by the Bowers and Wilkins stereo system.

     We test the tech in a lot of cars throughout the year, from econoboxes to big SUVs, but occasionally a really special ride drops into our laps. In this case, it was the Aston Martin DB9 Volante, just one of the best-looking cars around. Brian Cooley was thrilled about the James Bond associations. The rest of us were just pleased to ride in a car with detailed coachwork and a body that turned heads up and down the sidewalk. Sure, the car might not have been the cream of the crop for cabin tech, but that didn't keep us from extensively test-driving it.

Cadillac SRX turbo boost

     Last year we tested Cadillac's SRX small SUV. As most of its cabin tech mirrors what's in the CTS sedan, we had high praise for the vehicle; however, we felt its direct injection 3-liter V-6 engine didn't give it enough power. This year, Cadillac is releasing its top trim vehicle in the SRX line with a turbocharged 2.8-liter V-6 engine under the hood.

     Despite the smaller displacement, the turbo SRX gets 35 more horsepower than the direct injection version has. Even though its fuel economy suffers from the turbo, it's not much. We also like that the car's has an aggressive transmission with a sport mode that digs deep for power.

     The SRX's navigation and stereo system are very nice, but we felt its phone system was feature-poor. According to Cadillac, the 2011 SRX will have an even more robust Bluetooth hands-free phone system, giving us something more to look forward to.
